Spitalfields Music is working with a group of 8 young people, aged between 14 and 25, who live, work or study in Tower Hamlets. Together they are working to devise, produce, and deliver events, developing their knowledge and skills and building networks within their peers and the industry.
In addition to programming two events within the Summer Festival 2010, the group take part in a training programme of learning opportunities and visits led by their mentor, Renell Shaw.
Objectives
- Hands-on experience of developing, producing and delivering events
- A clearer understanding of leadership skills and entrepreneurial skills
- Access to a broad range of music, through visits to range of concerts
- Access to artists / musicians – to discuss their perspective on programming
- Contact with a range of music producers and Spitalfields Music partners
- A chance to be recognised as young artists and producers
- Visits to cultural events within London
- Support of mentors and facilitators during the project
- Access to Spitalfields Music office to plan the project
- A small budget to produce the events
- Access to Spitalfields Music production team and Front of House and general management
- Support of specialists in marketing / communications & producing
- Forge partnerships with other young programmers groups – including the Roundhouse and Young & Serious.
Expected outcomes
- That this project will enable 450 young people across Tower Hamlets and East London to try something different within the creative industries, through participation in the events created by the Young Programmers.
- Young people between the ages of 14 – 25 will make a positive contribution to the development of their local community.
- Young people involved will be provided with guidance and networks to assist them to develop a career within the creative industry.
- Spitalfields Music, as a catalyst for arts production in Tower Hamlets will work alongside its partner organisations to develop their own practice in the involvement of young people within projects.
- The project will help Spitalfields Music to improve young people’s services and develop our understanding of how best to enable young people to lead the development of projects.
Spitalfields Music intends to extend our governance framework to enable young people to actively participate in decision making systems. By the end of the project we will have established an active network of young people within Spitalfields and local environs that regularly assist us in the development and running of our organisation.
