Life behind the lens

Elliot Langston is a Year 11 student from Folkestone who had his eyes opened to a new world of possibilities when he was introduced to film making as part of the project Press Gang.

Project: Press Gang

Shepway Find Your Talent

Elliot explains more about his experience with Press Gang, a Find Your Talent Shepway project:

"I first came to work with the Folkestone Film Factory because at school I am taking a B-tech course in Media Studies, so I was asked to attend a talk by Zac about what the Folkestone Film Factory is, what we’d be filming and when the first meeting would be. It sounded fun so I went along. It’s hard to put in one concept but what I have enjoyed the most about filming has to be the interviewing that I did.

"I was finding out what was going on at the event and what the interviewers do. Through doing this I have learnt that preparation is really important so I know what I would be asking and it stopped me stuttering. The project will help me with what I want to do in the future because this has given me the opportunity to try all this filming and I never knew I would enjoy it this much."

Press Gang filmed bands at Folkestone's Quarterhouse, a new experience for Elliot: "The best thing about it is that it's given me something so different and new to try. Every session we were learning something different. It has made me more confident, getting ready for an interview and knowing what to say."

It was the first time he'd had the chance to use filming equipment, and practice the various skills involved in creating a film, both behind and in front of the camera. While the project gave the group the chance to try different aspects of film making, Elliot chose to concentrate on interviewing and presenting.

"I definitely want to do more of this in the future, working in TV or making films maybe," Elliot says, "I love it. Even if people don't want to go into film or anything similar in the future, they should try it out because it's such a fun experience - every filming session is a blast."
