This project provided an exciting and engaging programme of activity for young carers based on exploring Southampton’s maritime heritage in a dynamic and interactive way.
It included a trip on Southampton University National Oceanography Centre’s Research Vessel Callista, visits to some of Southampton’s historic sites with maritime links, and handling material from Southampton’s archive collections.
The boat trip offered a rare opportunity for the young people to see the city from the water. With copies of old photos, maps and charts on board, the young people examined the differences between Southampton then and now. Landmarks old and new were researched so that the young people developed an appreciation of Southampton as a port with an extensive maritime heritage.
